Narrow-Ridged Finless Porpoise Necropsy Research
The Narrow-ridged finless porpoise, a small species of porpoise, found in Korea, China, and Japan, is known for its shy nature and distinctive appearance. However, its population has dramatically declined, leading to its designation as a marine protected species by the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries in 2016 and its listing as endangered on the IUCN Red List in 2017. In 2020, the IUCN World Conservation Congress passed a resolution calling for urgent conservation action.
At Plan Ocean, we focus on conducting necropsies of Narrow-ridged finless porpoises and other marine animals around the Korean Peninsula to better understand the causes of their deaths. We also conduct collaborative research on microplastics, histopathology, persistent organic pollutants (POPs), and other biological studies. Our findings will help shape public-private conservation strategies and policies to protect these marine species.

Marine Biodiversity Conservation
Research on ecological characteristics of Narrow-Ridged Finless Porpoise
Plan Ocean is partnering with the Marine Animal Research and Conservation (MARC), UK-based Chelonia Limited, and the Yeosu Marine Environment and Rescue Team to study the ecological characteristics and regional status of narrow-ridged finless porpoises. Using underwater acoustic devices (F-POD), we are gathering data that will be incorporated into a comprehensive conservation policy for the species.

Expanding Sustainable Fisheries
Driving Market Transformation
Unsustainable fishing practices are rapidly depleting marine resources and damaging surrounding ecosystems. To address this, Plan Ocean is collaborating with producers, distributors, supermarkets, local governments, and NGOs to promote sustainable seafood. By forming alliances and implementing market-driven strategies, we aim to increase awareness and encourage the widespread distribution of responsibly sourced seafood.

Expanding Sustainable Fisheries
Advancing Sustainability Certifications
We are committed to expanding sustainable fisheries by advancing sustainability certifications. Through partnerships with organizations like the Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) and the Aquaculture Stewardship Council (ASC), we promote responsible fisheries and aquaculture practices. Our efforts also include Fisheries Improvement Projects (FIP) and Aquaculture Improvement Projects (AIP), which help boost exports, improve the livelihoods of fishermen, and protect our oceans for future generations.
